My biggest fear is that eventually you will see me the way I see myself.

Only in America can you be pro-death penalty, pro-war, pro-unmanned drone bombs, pro-nuclear weapons, pro-guns, pro-torture, pro-land mines, and still call yourself ‘pro-life.’

I believe that one day I’ll get marriage, but this [civil unions] may be a necessary step, or not. Maybe America will simply leave “civil unions” for gays and then that would be shameful but FAR better than what we have now which is just really hateful to gays. But we don’t even have that.

We could have had that, but the conservatives in the USA passed legal measures preventing that because of hatred of gays. You might be saying, “No, they are protecting marriage.” To which I say, “Okay. Fine. You win. I’ll take the civil union then. CHECK PLEASE.” And leave a happy guy. But they took that from me because taking marriage wasn’t enough. They pissed and shit on me and took that possibility away too.

That’s hateful and vindictive. As such, I’ll only take “marriage” now.

We believe homophobia to be the exclusive territory of diehards, the people who wave signs that “God Hates Fags” or broadcast their revulsion through a microphone outside Old Navy on State Street. We label them as “crazy” and quickly look away.

However, bigotry isn’t so easily identifiable. It doesn’t always wave signs or march on your funeral or spit in your face at a Pride parade. Bigotry might be your grandfather who turns away slightly when you hug your boyfriend or your grandmother who asks you’re bringing your “friend” to Christmas. It might be your mother who gave life to you but doesn’t know how to deal with this other thing inside you, who fights herself to love you better. It might live in your own heart, tucked away in one of the rooms you never go into, a room you might not know is there. It might shine in that ersatz smile you show to the trans* and queer homeless youth that walk down your street, the ones you push past and learn to politely ignore when you get that late-night cocktail. It might be the neighborhood you want to keep “nice.”

The power of a glance has been so much abused in love stories, that it has come to be disbelieved in. Few people dare now to say that two beings have fallen in love because they have looked at each other. Yet it is in this way that love begins, and in this way only.

Having sex with other people of your gender isn’t an identity, it’s an act. And, like sex in general among consenting adults, people should be able to do it if they want to. Having sex with someone shouldn’t require an identity crisis….People shouldn’t be forced to categorize themselves as ‘gay,’ ‘straight,’ or ‘bi.’ People are just people. Maybe you’re mostly attracted to men. Maybe you’re mostly attracted to women. Maybe you’re attracted to everyone. These are historical claims — not future predictions. If we truly want to expand the scope of human freedom, we should encourage people to date who they want; not just provide more categorical boxes for them to slot themselves into. A man who has mostly dated men should be just as welcome to date women as a woman who’s mostly dated men.So that’s why I’m not gay. I hook up with people. I enjoy it. Sometimes they’re men, sometimes they’re women. I don’t see why it needs to be any more complicated than that.
